Open Call for Proposals
Deadline is midnight PST, June 15, 2026
We’re now accepting submissions for our 2027 Program—inviting bold, site-specific work in one of the Northwest’s most dynamic creative spaces. Building Five’s 2027 residencies center on the theme Germination.
Germination, the 2027 theme, marks the first phase of a three-year inquiry—focusing on emergence, growth, and the accumulation of ideas over time.
We are seeking bold, site-responsive proposals that fully engage the scale and character of Building Five. We encourage artists to think expansively—across volume, duration, and interaction—and to consider how their work can activate, transform, or reimagine the space. Proposals may include large-scale installations, immersive environments, performative interventions, or experimental formats that push beyond traditional presentation.
Building Five is a 5,000-square-foot contemporary arts venue in Portland dedicated to large-scale installations, interdisciplinary residencies, and community programming. Housed in a transformed World War II–era industrial building once part of NW Marine Ironworks, the space features 50-foot ceilings and an expansive open floor plan, inviting ambitious, site-responsive work at scale.
We welcome applications from individuals and collaborative teams working across disciplines. Ideal candidates are self-directed, rigorous in their thinking, and willing to take creative risks.
Successful proposals will demonstrate:
A strong awareness of spatial dynamics and scale
Innovative use of materials, form, or audience experience
A clear relationship to the theme Germination
The capacity to realize ambitious work within the residency period
Residents are expected to include a public-facing component, such as open studio hours, performances, workshops, or artist talks.
About Building Five and Our Residencies
Over the next three years, our residency program will explore a shared framework that unfolds across evolving annual themes. Together, these themes form a broader inquiry into how we relate to one another, our environments, and the futures we are shaping.
Germination, the 2027 theme
(R)evolution, the 2028 theme, marks the second phase of a three-year inquiry—focusing on transformation, disruption, and cyclical change.
Duality, the 2029 theme, marks the final phase of a three-year inquiry—focusing on coexistence, tension, and the interplay of opposing forces.
Application Fee $25
Please submit a proposal along with your bio, artist statement, CV and work samples from the last three years.
